The secret ingredient to landing your dream digital marketing job isn’t a fancy degree. It’s all about resourcefulness, creativity, and a willingness to hustle.
If I were to do it all over again, the steps below would remain the same:
1. Learn the lingo: Don’t know what CTR or CVR means? I highly recommend getting certified in your field of interest.
– Google has free courses with certifications in search engine marketing, SEO, analytics and more.
– Facebook (Meta) Blueprint has self-guided courses to help build your marketing skills across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp.
– HubSpot Academy has a free course and certification in email marketing.
– Coursera, Udemy and others have plenty of affordable online courses or certifications in your field of interest.
2. Stay current: Read publications like Search Engine Land, Social Media Today, LLC, ADWEEK, MarketingProfs, etc. There is no shortage of free online learning, whether from courses, YouTube, or leading publications.
3. Network: Once you learn the lingo and have some foundational knowledge, connect with people in the industry. Just like there is no shortage of learning, there’s no shortage of marketing conferences, networking events, LinkedIn groups, and building your brand online.
4. Apply: Not much of a networker? Begin applying for internships and entry-level jobs. LinkedIn and most job sites have plenty of digital marketing positions.
5. Be Persistent: Breaking into a new field may take time. Don’t get discouraged by rejection; keep learning, improving, and applying for positions.
The key to success in digital marketing is a combination of knowledge, practical experience, and a willingness to adapt to the ever-changing landscape.
